A one-day conference and Annual General meeting
of the state chapter of the Nigeria Institute
of Public Relations (NIPR) has ended with
a call on the people of the Niger Delta to
adopt a more refined approach in their quest
for a better deal from the Government and
multinational companies.
In a lecture titled the "Challenges
of PR practice in the Niger Delta",
the manager, Yenagoa Liaison Office of Shell,
Mr. Fidelis Agbiki said the use of violence
and hostage taking in demanding for amenities
and basic infrastructure from companies was
no longer fashionable.
Rather, Mr. Agbiki advocated the use of dialogue
and mutual respect for constituted authorities
adding that it was time, the people changed
their mentality of self-pity or perceived
oppression either by Government or operators
of the oil industry but to rise up to the
challenges of sustainable development and
Nation-building.
Mr. Fidelis Agbiki who served as Chief Press
Secretary to some Military Administrators
of Rivers and Bayelsa States commended the
organisers for the programme, which he noted
was coming at the most appropriate time.
Speaking as chairman of the occasion, the
General Manager, State Newspaper Corporation,
Mr. Mathew Mieseigha urged participants of
the conference to use their profession to
enhance good governance, good-neighbourliness
and the corporate image of society.
Also speaking, the President of the Institute,
Mr. Bobo Brown said the institute would be
positioned to ensure it participants effectively
in fashioning a positive image for the country.
The President was represented by a member
of the governing council of the Institute,
representing Abia, Anambra and Imo States,
fellow Akor Nzemanze.
The Immediate past Acting Chairmperson, Ms.
Viktoria Egbuson had earlier enumerated some
of the achievements of her executive, which
included expanded membership base, purchase
of plots of Land for the construction of
the Image House of the Institute and production
of membership directory for the chapter.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Oil
and Gas, Chief Thompson Okorotie and his
counterpart of Research and Documentation
Bureau, Mr. Nengi Josef-Ilagha as well as
the General Managers of Bayelsa State Broadcasting
Corporation, Mr. Brighten Sorgwe and that
of NTA Yenagoa, Mr. John Suowari attended
the conference.
At the end of the conference which also featured
election of new executive, Mr Barclays Ayakoroma,
Executive Director, Council for Arts and
Culture emerged as the new Chairman after
defeating two (2) other contestants.
The position of the PRO went to Mr. Leo Adelakun
who also won his opponent.
The other members were returned unopposed.
They include Mr. Preye Wariowei, Vice Chairman,
Mr. Gbeinpei Appah, Secretary, Mr. Sunny
Okoro, Assistant Secretary, while the position
of Treasurer went to Ms. Sophia Obi and that
of Financial Secretary - Jerry Omezi.
